Upcycling Maps

Today's post is to show a birthday card I made recently for a friend using an old ordnance survey map and the lovely Tim Holtz Globe die I picked up in the Sizzix sale in January. I love that globe.

The background is a panel from the OS Dartmoor 1973 one inch tourist map which bought in a charity shop for 50p. Yes, it was difficult to cut it because maps are so lovely but I already have a copy of this map so once the scissors were poised, all it took was a deep breath and a brave snip and I was away.
The globe was cut twice from blue and green textured card stock. I cut out the land masses and mounted them on the globe after distressing with antique linen and vintage photo inks.  A little treasure gold is added to the globe and the sentiment stamped in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Nice.
I may make some more of these, they are simple to do and I have loads more panels left from my 50p map purchase.

  1. What a wonderful upcycling of the map, and it's the perfect setting for the globe, which is delicious with that little touch of distressing and gilding... great card!

  3. Great card Julia! I know just what you mean about cutting into maps as I am the same. Fortunately I have to replace some on a regular basis so I can use the old ones guilt free:-)
